Express your style with this nature-inspired wall decor artwork with a handcrafted Kolam embroidery pattern of a butterfly.

A Kolam is a geometrical line drawing composed of curved loops, drawn around a grid pattern of dots. Kolam drawings are an integral part of life in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, it is the art form of women as deeply infused with meaning and as transient as the sand mandala of the Tibetan Monks.

In Tamil the word kolam means “beauty, form and play”. While the making of the kolam requires mathematical precision and hand eye coordination, they are also created with a sense of play and colors are added along with more traditional symbols.

The featured embroidery product has been handmade by women of the Irula tribe living in and around Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu. For the first time in their lives, these women are experiencing economic independence by doing embroidery work. Embroidery work by these women is a unique expression and therefore cannot be replicated. There may be imperfections, but they make it splendid. They focus on using the ‘pulli kolam’ pattern as they are familiar with it.

Don’t miss the opportunity to own this superb handmade embroidery wall decor piece featuring a butterfly, and at the same time help the women of Irula stitch their lives together and out of poverty.

NOTE: This is made on a unframed/unstretched folded cloth of size 22 in X 22 in (56 cms X 56 cms) with the embroidery size of 12 in. wide and 12 in. tall (30.5 cms X 30.5 cm).
