Presenting a superb handmade Mughal miniature painting featuring the famous Indo Persian artwork of "The Raven Addressing the Assembled Animals".

This delightful rendering of the story can be ascribed to Miskin, one of the greatest painters in the workshop of the Mughal emperor Akbar (r. 1556-1605). An expert draftsman and colorist, Miskin was best known for his skilled and whimsical depictions of animals and birds. The modern artist has captured Miskin’s unmistakable style which comprised of organic compositions against a subdued palette with bight accents.

In this painting we see a gathering of several animals. Up in the peak, we find a raven, almost imperceptible at first look. The animal, symbolically associated with death at the same time with wisdom, addresses to the rest of the creatures.

The Mughal emperors were very into knowing exotic animals through painting, such is the case here through the inclusion of foreign animals from outside the Indian subcontinent, like the cheetahs on the left. They also included mythical creatures such as the dragon and the phoenix on the right.

There is a strong upward directionality in the painting, which creates movement towards the raven standing on the rock. This painting does have a very crowded composition, there is very little negative space throughout the painting; almost the entire paper is occupied. Overall, the painting is an extremely detailed and intricate piece, consisting of a wide array of colors and subject matter. It has a perfect coordination of feeling, insight, and technical refinement.

This historical Mughal miniature painting comes directly from the Indian state of Rajasthan – (historically noted as the epicenter of Mughal art). It was born from a single set of masterful artisan hands, using vibrant opaque watercolors on paper.
