The subject of this exquisite painting is Indian Emperor Shah Jahan (1592–1666), shown in the traditional pose of a Mughal ruler, wearing luxurious jewels and clothing. The artist has beautifully rendered, with precise and tiny brushstrokes, the silky texture of Shah Jahan’s beard and eyebrows, the gleaming surfaces of the pearls around his neck and on his turban, the gold-embroidered clothing, and sumptuous silk and gold prayer rug draped over the banister on which he leans.
The famous Taj Mahal in Agra, India was made by this emperor as a tribute to his wife and empress on her premature death in 1631.
Keeping with the tradition of such art the back of the plate is also painted with beautiful objects. This concept was introduced by the British in 19th century India.
The magnificent representation of the emperor is hand painted with opaque watercolors on eco-friendly faux ivory with intricate designs. The material used in the artwork has the look of antique ivory but is actually faux ivory that is "aged" with acrylic paint and sealed with a matte finish, giving the piece a wonderful distressed look. The whole process is very labor intensive and painstakingly achieved.
