The Haft Awrang is a compilation of seven masnavi poems and constitutes the major poetical work of Jami (d. 1492) composed in the second half of the 15th century.
The artwork depicts king Solomon and Bilqis (queen of Sheba) speaking openly to each other, exchanging their innermost secrets and revealing their mutual quest for gratification. They are seated in very colorful and elaborate infrastructure and surroundings of flora and fauna.
The composition contains several signs of Solomon's legendary civil and divine authority such as his white face cloth and flaming nimbus, the winged angel and hoary demon. His reputation for wisdom and justice is signified by the elderly man seated on the terrace and by the aged woman presenting a petition at the door. In all likelihood the woman with babe in arms refers to Solomon's celebrated proposal to split a child between two contesting mothers.
The verse inscribed in gold over the palace doorway invests these various Solomonic symbols with a more coherent meaning.
