Presenting for your personal collection a beautiful miniature Yoga art.

This rare painting invites wonder at India’s extraordinary artistic heritage and with it you will feel the magic and spiritual enlightenment of Yoga. The art of Yoga constitutes a visual archive that attempts to capture one or several of its attributes, as a philosophical school, a Hindu tradition, a spiritual science and an exercise regimen.

The albums of Emperor Jahangir (reigned 1605–27) and Shah Jahan (reigned 1627–57) sympathetically deployed the figure of the yogi to project a vision of a diverse and harmonious empire.

Artists in the atelier of Jahangir’s son, Shah Jahan, employed a formal strategy as a space that unites diverse social types. In the featured artwork, within a rustic landscape, a musician sings devotional verses to a youthful imperial prince and an aged self-denying Hindu with long dreadlocks. The folio’s flower-strewn outer border features perceptive studies of variously quirky and beatific yogis.

While the exquisite folio is a paradigm of imperial ideology, its individual elements would have resonated on multiple levels. For example, the intricately knotted roots of the sheltering tree not only create an aureole of light around the holy man’s bald pate, they also draw our attention to the minute portal of his cell. By 1630, even this small motif was deeply implanted within Mughal consciousness as a signifier of yogic attainment.
