Presenting a superb hand-made Mughal miniature painting of the coronation of Bahadur Shah Zafar.

Bahadur Shah Zafar was the last Mughal Emperor of Delhi, and one of the most talented and tolerant of his dynasty. Born in 1775, when the British were still clinging to the Indian shore, he had in his lifetime seen the Mughals reduced to political insignificance as the British transformed themselves from vulnerable traders into an aggressive colonial government.

The great Coronation Portrait of Zafar is the last great imperial portrait of the Mughal tradition. The original was produced to mark Zafar’s accession to the throne in 1837. Zafar is painted (along with his two sons) against Shah Jahan’s Imperial Mughal scales of justice, and although he is weighed down with gems, his face and demeanor is nevertheless that of a Sufi ascetic.

In this handmade replica of the original, the modern artist has captured this historical and final moments of the glory of Mughal dynasty in an unmistakable style which comprised of organic compositions against a subdued palette with bright accents.

This Mughal miniature painting comes directly from the Indian state of Rajasthan – (historically noted as the epicenter of Mughal art). It was born from a single set of masterful artisan hands, using vibrant opaque watercolors on paper.
