Kangra painting is the pictorial art of Kangra, named after Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, India, a former princely state, which patronized the art. Pahari paintings, as the name suggests, were paintings executed in the hilly regions of India, in the sub-Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh. It is in the development and modification of Pahari paintings, that the Kangra School features. Kangra paintings belong to the school of Pahari paintings that were patronized by the Rajput rulers between the 17th and 19th centuries.

The striking feature of Kangra paintings is the verdant greenery it depicts. The style is naturalistic, and great attention is paid to detail. The Kangra paintings feature flowering plants and creepers, leafless trees, rivulets and brooks. The Kangra painters employed cool and fresh colors and with the lyrical blending of form and color.

This charming and busy art captures Lord Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi seated on Garuda his Mount (Vahana). Lord Vishnu is properly jeweled and carrying all his attributes in his many hands. He is wearing a decorated crown (Kiritmukuta) with lotus petals, long white flower garland (Vejayantimala) and orange lower garment. Next to him is Goddess Lakshmi adorned with white pearls necklace, nose-ring and earrings. She is wearing a plain orange blouse (Choli), orange striped skirt (Lehenga) with plates and transparent odhani (shawl) with golden border over her dress. Both are looking at each other.

Garuda is described as the king of birds and a kite-like figure. He is shown either in zoomorphic form (giant bird with partially open wings) or an anthropomorphic form (man with wings and some bird features). Garuda is generally a protector with power to swiftly go anywhere, ever watchful and an enemy of the serpent. Garuda is the mount of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.
