You will love this colorful Rajasthani Ragini selfie art.

What is a ragini? Classical Indian music is based on ragas--a selection of notes and patterns, improvised into a melody by the musician, that evoke particular emotions, times of day, and seasons of the year. Each raga has a number of subsidiaries named as family members, especially raginis (wives of the raga). Poets and painters interpreted the essence of each raga and ragini into words and images. These series of illustrated verses are called ragamalas (garlands of ragas) and are among the most popular subjects in Indian Rajasthani painting.

The painting personifies Ragini Sorathi, wife of Raga Megha Mallar, as a pining lover. She is seated with a peacock in her lap while she waits. In Indian mythology, peacock symbolizes absence of a lover.

Along with the fine detailing, this artwork adds a modern theme to the times gone by. It reflects upon the fact that during her wait for her lover, the Ragini would most probably have indulged in a selfie of herself and the elegant world around her, if smart phones & digital photography were as pervasive as today.

These miniatures are as much aids to spiritual awakening as they are pretty pictures. Like seeds, they belie their tiny size with the limitless potential of their contents.
