You will delight in the richness and depth of this stunning Mina Kari art from Iran.

The art of Minakari or Enameling is called miniature of fire. Minakari or Enameling is the art of painting, coloring and ornamenting the surface of metals by fusing over it brilliant colors that are decorated in an intricate design.

Mina (or meena) is the feminine form of Minoo in Persian, meaning heaven. Mina refers to the Azure color of heaven. The Iranian craftsmen of Sasanied era invented this art and Mughals spread it to India and other countries.

Today Minkari is not just confined to traditional Jewelry but diversifies into more modern products including bowls, vases, spoons, and like in this artwork being showcased, wall pieces. Different kinds of local symmetrical patterns are used in Minakari paintings, such as ‘eslimi’, which is one of the well-known Islamic patterns also used in traditional architecture, painting with one color as the background and then using bright golden colors on it, using a very fine pen to make miniature patterns and then beautifying the background with green, blue or brown colors.

The process begins with a copper sheet that is covered with thick white enamel and is sent off to be baked in kiln. The goal is to create a white canvas, a clear base to work on. When the piece is all white and smooth, the Minakar starts coloring with magic colors made with various chemical oxides for achieving different shades. After all the painting is done, it’s time for the baking process in kiln.    When the Minakari is out from the kiln, the Minakars usually cover it with a thin layer of transparent enamel, so that the surface becomes smooth to touch and shiny to the eye. The piece has another trip to make to the kiln, and when it comes out, the Minakari artwork is finally ready.
